The
Rhodes Sheepshead Guild
The
Rhodes Sheepshead Guild was established on
at the behest of the local community to honour the source of their
livelihood - the humble land-maggot aka sheep! The purpose is
to gather the community around the dining table, to imbibe vast
quantities of whatever refreshment takes your fancy and enjoy
the evening. Occasional speeches are permitted, provided the noise
level can be decreased to a dull roar.
Otherwise known as "Die Rhodes
Skaapkop Gilde" in Afrikaans, participation is by invitation
and a brief induction ceremony that revolves around greeting existing
members with a "beh-beh-beheheh", a solid dose of "Taxi"
snuff and a shot of the drink of the day, neat!
The entrance fee is a baked Sheepshead
and the dress code is that members dress as they please but must
wear a tie and no socks are allowed. Members are all given nicknames
such as an inordinately tall fellow was listed as "Boorgatspook"
(Borehole ghost). Ironically, repairing boreholes pumps and piping
is his occupation!
Gatherings are held on a bi-annual
basis during agriculturally quiet times and which occasionally
overlaps with the presence of house guests at Walkerbouts, some
of whom can't believe their eyes and others who join in the fun.
Late night stories abound and most of which are forgotten by the
next morning!
