Bokspruit/Riflespruit drive
A morning drive up the Bokspruit or Riflespruit valleys is a feast
for the eyes and is +-60km or two hours in duration excluding
"Kodak moments".
Maartenshoek
From Rhodes, +-8km on the road to Barkly East, the first turnoff
to the right is the entrance to this special valley. Continue
until reaching the bridge at the Bell River. Cross and continue
until reaching the first gate that signifies the end of the public
thoroughfare. Maartenshoek has several secret treasures that can
be enjoyed by prior arrangement such as the "Holkrans"
on the farm Longholme that also boasts of "The Boiling Pot",
a pothole in the sandstone streambed of a tributary of the Maartenshoekspruit.
Rock art sites can also be visited by prior arrangement.
Monard Mountain Stroll by arrangement
only
3km from Rhodes towards Barkly, at the second farm on the right,
park at the Art Gallery on Monard. From there, cross the road
and follow the track up the mountain side and along the contour
descending some 2km from the starting point and stroll on back
to Monard.
Naudesnek Pass - Mooidraai
30km or an hour's drive from Rhodes, Mooidraai is located less
than 1km from the top of Naudesnek Pass. On a clear day, the view
is spectacular and legend has it that one can see the sea from
there on a very clear day.
Park Gate Waterfall by arrangement
only
The waterfall at Park Gate may not be a spectacular Niagara but
is a delight on a hot midsummers day. +-12km from Rhodes and after
the turnoff to Park Gate Guest Farm, the entrance is at the first
gate on the left next to the foundations of an old shed. Follow
the track around the land through the next gate and continue to
the third gate. Park at the gate and follow the paths to the waterfall
that is clearly visible from this point. Please remove everything
that you take with you as littering is a cardinal offence in our
pristine environment!
